Recycling and Rehabilitation
Recycling and Rehabilitation
“Recycling and reuse can offer engineering, economic and environmental benefits. Recycled materials should get first consideration in materials selection.” – FHWA Policy Statement
Reusing Valuable Resources While Reducing Costs
Rough, potholed roads pose safety problems, and they cause drivers to use more fuel and have higher vehicle maintenance costs. While reconstruction is costly and time-consuming, highway agencies are recognizing the importance of fixing bad roads while safeguarding our environment. In fact, asphalt is the most recycled of all materials.
Rational Recycling
Raw material costs are skyrocketing. Permits for new aggregate quarries are very difficult to obtain. Resources are dwindling. It just makes sense to recycle the materials already on our roadways. There are other reasons for recycling instead of adding additional layers. The level of the road can be maintained so that clearances under bridges, existing curbs, shoulders and driveway levels can be retained. Base inadequacies can be fixed. Oxidized, aged asphalt can be rejuvenated, and poor aggregate gradations can be corrected. In-place recycling processes proceed quickly, so there is minimal traffic disruption.
As with any paving project, the materials and process should be carefully selected. They should work with the existing materials and address the problems which caused the pavement to fail–whether the pavement failed because it was simply worn out, or because of material, design, drainage or other deficiencies.
